Why I Can't Take the UN Seriously

From the UN's website:

In other business, the following delegations were elected as Vice-chairpersons [of the UN Disarmament Commission], by acclamation: Chile, Uruguay and Iran.

This is why the UN is useless, along with Libya and Cuba on the Human Rights commision a couple of years ago.

Why anyone puts any stock in what the UN does is beyond me. It's the League of Nations all over again.

Like vaccinating millions of poor children in India against polio? Yeah, what a load of crap.

So is this how your "logic" works: Iran does not deserve a seat on the UN Disarmament Commission, because it has violated certain treaties relating to armaments.

If this is the case, it's pure hypocrisy for the US to be on such a committee as well, and any number of other committees, given its history of mining harbors, executing its citizens, violating international treaties, testing nuclear weapons, etc, etc, etc.

If every member nation of the UN was required to have a spotless record before participating, it would be a very small club indeed.

I must admit, I sympathize with hurtleg's frustration with the hypocrisy. It's how I feel about the Republican party: Tom DeLay remained Majority Leader after repeated ethics violations, and while under investigation for more. That sickened me, to have guys like this running our country. So I understand how hurtleg feels.

Of course, the UN isn't running the world, the way the GOP is running the country.

In fact, what actual authority does this human rights committee have? None. So who cares if Iran is on it?

Or Montserrat, for that matter?

My point exactly. Why all the angst in the lead up to the Iraqi war that there was no additional security council resolution.

"Like vaccinating millions of poor children in India against polio?"

Good point, I wasn't clear in expressing my frustration. I have no problem with Unicef and other aid departments. I am expressing my frustration with the security council.
