Just as the re-election of W. in 2004 was a huge victory for al-Qaeda (remember that amateur-yet-effective bit of reverse psychology bin-Laden pulled in his pre-election video by seeming hostile towards Bush and indifferent towards Kerry?), here's one more indication that W. is playing into the hands of America's current world-historical enemy:

From How Al Qaeda views a long Iraq war:

"The most important thing is that the jihad continues with steadfastness ... indeed, prolonging the war is in our interest," says the writer, who goes by the name Atiyah. The letter, released last week, was recovered in the rubble of the Iraqi house where Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, former leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq, was killed by a US bomb in June.

Hi Jeff,

I'm not as sure. A good propagandist always plays the "heads I win, tails you lose" card. If the war in Iraq draws out continuously, it is a glorious victory for Allah; if the US leaves, it is a glorious victory for Allah.

If the Israelis stayed in Lebanon, it would have been a glorious victory for Allah, all of those dead Israelis. When the Israelis left Lebanon, it was a glorious victory for Allah.

A terrorist does not think clearly, and such a man is quite unlikely to have his mind changed to the good by much of anything.

Exactly my point. We lost the moment we got there.

I would say that we won when we caught Saddam and then lost when we stayed there, as if the Detroit Lions were up by 6 points and could take a knee, but decided to throw the ball and get intercepted for a touchdown.
